All ready for the off! Club members stand ready at their posts.

John Hills (left), winner of the DBA tournament receiving his prize from Philip

Sidnell of Pen & Sword, sponsors of the event.

John used a very nicely painted Medieval French army to gain ultimate victory!

Johns Tournament report -

I played in the Sittingbourne tournament yesterday.

There were 8 of us with a nice mix of armies:

I took Medieval French (revolting peasant version, no dismounting for me!)
My 17 year old son took Later Hoplite Greek - Thessalians.

The others were:

Early Poles
Free Company
Northern Chinese
Dacian
Mongol
Eastern Patrician Roman

My aim for the day was to have some fun wargames, win or lose, and I achieved this very nicely, thanks to having a great bunch of guys to play against who all played hard and fair.

We were split into 2 leagues and played the other 3 in our league to get a ranking.  Then we were paired off with the corresponding player in the other league to fight for 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, etc.

I lost my first game against the Mongols 4-3.  This was a tough game, and it was a shock to see those LH taking down my Spears and Bows!

My second game was against my son, who had beaten me in a practice game the night before.  We both went at each other in a close game which I managed to scrape 4-3.

My third game was against the Chinese.  I was completely outplayed in this game, with the matchups all wrong.  My opponent seemed to have the game in the bag, until I threw a peasant warband at his Knight General who had a blocked recoil after pursuing.  I managed to beat him at at 2 vs 4, for a embarassing victory.

After lunch I found myself in the final against the Poles.  Again I think I was on for a hiding, but my dice came through (three 6s in a row) and my crossbows shot down his knight general.  By the time we finished fighting the combats that turn I had won 6-2 for a second embarassing victory.

Thanks to the Sittingbourne guys for setting this up and running a great little show - looking forward to it again next year, this end Kent is in desperate need of a regular wargaming event like this!

I would also like to thank Pen & Sword Books for putting up the prizes - I won £100 worth of their books, so I took the 2 books about Alexander's Successors, one about Mithridates the Great, one about Pyrhus of Epirus and one about the Roman conquest of North Africa.  They all look like great books and it was really hard deciding which one to read first.

The Wyvern Hall, smaller of the two halls used for Broadside.

More views of the Wyvern Hall.

Despite its relatively small size it was a busy place!

The Sports Hall, not long after opening.

Traders reported steady stream of interest throughout the day,

most want to be at Broadside 2012 too!

Another view of the sports hall with is great variety of traders.
